Best friends always have a good story to tell, don’t they? Generally, the closer the friendship, the more detailed their story is. In the same way, all genuine Christians have a story with God and know exactly the special moment when God became real to them. What about you, do you remember your story with God? Through this series, you are going to be given an opportunity to have a new story with the Lord!
“ And God said, let there be light, and there was light. God saw that the light was good” (Genesis 1:3,4a).
The first phrase that God said to give origin to the universe was: “Let there be light.” With that command, God turned that which had been invisible into visible.
The light of the first day was abstract and undefined. But when the fourth day arrived, God created the sun: a strong light.
That light is always increasing and becoming brighter. Once we believe in the Lord and are saved, day by day we begin to see our impurities, sins, and even our good intentions. And this is the beginning of salvation: to recognize that we are sinners.
Inside of us there is still a selfish and proud life that is against God and that makes our service to Him difficult. If we were to see this strong light all at once, we wouldn’t be able to bear it. So, little by little, we receive that light and come to see our real condition. When we realize how much more we need the Lord, that light will become brighter and we’ll get to see everything we couldn’t see before. However, for this to happen, we cannot be covered before God’s presence; in other words, the veil has to be taken away.
This is why the bible says : “But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.”
The pure in heart will see God because they are not covered by anything (Matthew 5:8). When a veil is placed over someone’s face, it covers his eyes, but when it is taken away the person is able to see the light. The veil is related to the heart. A pure heart in the bible is mainly related to a heart that desires God.
“Whom have I in heaven but you? And besides you, I desire nothing on earth.” (Psalms 73:25)
The veil refers to everything we seek that is not the Lord. Tthe whole universe can become a veil between us and the Lord.
In the Old Testament, we have the example of Job, someone who was not aware of his sins until God shone His light upon him. Job had never touched God or seen the light. However, at the end of the book of Job, we see that he found God and told him: “My ears had heard of You but now my eyes have seen You. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.” (42:5-6). Why did he repent, young one? Because he saw his impurity. What about you, how do you know God? Have you only heard of Him or have you seen Him with your own eyes?
From the beginning, God has had only one purpose: to work Himself into us. For this reason, He has to win our heart. A heart that loves God is very precious to Him and is what He values the most. God wants man to love Him and seek Him. All of us that know God know that He is very gracious and merciful toward man and that He has a lot of work to do in each one of us.
But what is the way to cooperate with God?
First, it has to do with our heart! If we want to cooperate with God and allow Him to work in us, we first need to turn our heart back to the Lord for only the pure in heart will see God (Matthew 5:8).
How can the Lord work in people like us?
If we do not allow Him to work, He can’t. If we want Him to work in us, first we need to allow Him to purify us. It is hard for God to work in us if our heart is not pure. If our heart is not adequate, our focus is also incorrect.
But what if someone doesn’t want to allow God to do this? Then God has no way to do anything in him/her.
Therefore, giving our heart to God is opening the way for Him to work. He doesn’t want man to use his effort, ways, or wisdom – He only wants man’s heart, and this is the hardest part of God’s work in us.
Some may ask: How can we know if we are focused on something other than the Lord? How can we know what this is?
We have to have a heart willing to be worked on by God. “But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” (2 Corinthians 3:16). As a result we’ll feel inner freedom and peace in our conscience.
Here is another problem: If we stop receiving the light for too long, we lose the inner feeling and fall into darkness. It is in this moment that we need to repent before the Lord for our inability to see the light. Man does not fall into darkness all at once. When people fall into darkness they do so gradually, without noticing what is going on. It is in this unconscious and subtle way that man is taken, little by little, away from the Lord toward something that is not the Lord. This is the result of lacking the inner light.
Before knowing the Lord, none of us were pure in our thoughts and feelings; we were all totally impure and evil within and without. However, the Lord Jesus came to us one day, His gospel reached us, His voice echoed in our heart, and we were saved. The Lord rescued us and took us away from sin and evil.
If we receive the constant breaking before the Lord, the light will shine more and more in us, because the veil will be taken away little by little.
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalms 51:10)
“Trust the Lord with all your heart” (Proverbs 3:5a)
Young one, remember that someone who is insensitive to God will also be insensitive to sin. All our inner intentions and thoughts have to be confessed one by one. Outwardly, nobody will say that we are wrong, but inside, we will feel it. The path of life begins with confession. What about praying right now and asking the Lord that He may show you everything that hinders His work in you? Go to Him with simple but sincere words.
God really values when someone turns their heart towards Him. Do not feel condemned; we all have difficulties and make mistakes, but bear in mind a very important fact: God loves you. He wants to become your very best friend, and He wants you to have as many stories and experiences as you can with Him. He wants to hug you and come closer to you.
A heart that loves God is very precious to Him and is what He values the most.
This is only our first text of the series “The pure of heart”. Follow the ones to come, and most importantly, open your heart now in order to receive the light of the Lord. A big hug, and till the next post of this series! Jesus is Lord!
